Stephen graduated from the University of Canterbury in 1995 with a PhD in
Mechanical Engineering. During his study he held lecturing positions at the
University of Canterbury and Christchurch Polytechnic. In 1995 he joined Bath
University as a research officer to study linear and nonlinear control theory
applied to hydraulic systems.
In 1998 he became Research and Development Manager for Vosper Thornycroft in
their Hydraulic Power Division. During this time he lead the development and
commercialization of a number of new products and then after spending time as
Sales and Marketing Manager he became the Manager of the Waterjet Division.
In 2000 he became General Manager of Koop Nautic, a company specializing in
control systems for yachts based in Holland where his main focus was on new
product development and manufacturing methods to meet a rapidly expanding
dominance in the market.
Before joining Cii, he spent time as the Commercial Manager of a Christchurch
company manufacturing electrical equipment.
